Mobile phones have become a very popular device as a way to get online. According to an annual report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in the first quarter of 2011, about 45 per cent of UK Internet users used a handset to surf the web, up from 31 per cent in 2010. The biggest increase occurred among young people; more than 70 per cent of 16-24 year-olds accessed the Internet via a mobile phone, up from 44 per cent last year.

"There have been significant changes in the way people connect to the Internet in recent years," the report stated. "In 2011, almost half of Internet users connected to the Internet using a mobile phone, while away from the home or office."

Internet a necessity among young people
Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch, said in a statement:

"Younger Britons see the Internet as a necessity, not a luxury. Many are now using smartphones as their primary way of accessing the net, rather than home computers, and are becoming used to the idea of having the world in their pocket."

The Kids are Connected - like it or not!
“When 70% of your students have a personal Internet connection in their pockets, it’s time for schools to stop resisting their use. Remember just a few years ago how they all hated the calculator and thought it would kill mental arithmetic skills and so they banned it? A few years later it was required equipment for every child. So let’s skip the resistance stage and learn to love the mobile in school.” – Robert Hart-Fletcher, Kids and Media.
